BACKGROUND AND LEADERSHIP
Vital Voices’ Global Network affiliate in Haiti, Femmes en Démocratie (FED), resulted from the Vital Voices of the Americas Conference in 1998 in Montevideo, Uruguay. Six prominent Haitian women leaders participated in the conference and returned home and formed 100 Haitian Women for Vital Voices, a campaign to support Haitian women run for elected office, later founding the organization. Currently, the affiliate is led by co-founder Danielle Saint-Lot and Ann-Valerie Milfort, alumna of the FORTUNE/U.S. State Department Global Women’s Mentoring Program.
FED promotes women’s political participation through training and electoral observation; women’s entrepreneurship through training, networking and an annual trade fair; and the protection of legal and human rights through training, education and advocacy.
Since its inception, FED has reached hundreds of emerging women leaders throughout the country and serves as a clearinghouse for Haitian women’s organizations.
